My name is Merryl Chin - my office is located at Lawrence and Railside and I live at Cassandra.
I dont know how you would let the public know ,but I think it is important for people to know what terrible ethics some gas stations have (possibly instructed by the owners or the main gas companies).
I went to the Esso Station at Lawrence and Railside in Don Mills at 11.30pm - there was a long line up of people waiting to buy gas before the increase. No one was able to get gas - the rumor was that the regular gas had run out, and everyone was waiting for the attendant inside to switch to the supreme gas at the regular price - this was what was understood (I presume someone had asked the attendant).
After about 10 minutes, the attendant made an announcement that there was NO GAS.
I suspected that Esso did not want to sell the supreme gas at the regular price.
I left and went to the Petro Canada at Victoria Park and Lawrence. I arrived at approximately 11.45pm. The pump no. 6 would not take the credit card - there was a sign to "see the cashier". I went inside and was told by the attendant to leave the credit card and he would open the pump. Nothing happened - he did not release the gas from pump no.6. I went back inside and asked the attendant numerous times to release the pump. He pretended not to understand me, and ignored me while attending to other people who were purchasing miscellaneous itmes in the store. There were a few more people trying to get the attendant to release some pumps.
I realised at this point that the attendant would not release any pumps until the price increase came into effect at midnight. I was there at midnight, and lo and behold - all the pumps were released at the increased rate.
I refused to purchase the gas, and went back to the Esso Gas Station at Lawrence and Railside, as I suspected that there would be gas. Lo and behold, there was gas - only supreme gas which was being sold at the new regular gas rate $1.35. I spoke to the attendant and asked how come the station had gas withing half and hour when we were told that there was no gas. He said the pumps were not working, and he got them fixed. I found this was too much of a coincidence that at midnight, when the gas price was increased, the attendant was able to get the pumps working..
Obviously, it was because Esso did not want to sell the supreme gas at the lower $ 1.23 rate.
Whenever a gas station runs out of gas, it is normal practice to offer the supreme at the reular rate.
I have always been convinced that gas companies are always 'price fixing' , yet the government does nothing about it. If I were in a business and decided to be in the 'price fixing' business with other similar companies, I bet that I would be prosecuted.
The public is tired of this gas fiasco. And, a price increase of 12 or 13c - I dont see how this can be justified. And every gas station in Toronto knows at the same time everytime when to increase the price and what amount of increase it should be.
Enough is enough - something should be done, but unfortunately, I don't know.
